NBC's Al Roker and about 50 other TV meteorologists descended on Cape Canaveral for the launch, as well as 8,000 space program workers and guests.
Think superhero speed and accuracy for forecasting.
"It's like going from a black-and-white TV to high definition", Laura K Furgione, deputy director of the National Weather Service, told CBS Minnesota. Not only will GOES-R provide forecasters better tools for predicting disastrous weather events, but everyone will have better information on a day-to-day basis that can benefit our health and well-being.
"That also will mean more lives saved and better environmental intelligence".
But an Atlas V rocket did launch and carry the weather satellite into orbit at the end of the window, 4:42 p.m. MST.
GOES-R satellites will be in a geostationary orbit 22,500 miles above the Earth, always looking down and monitoring the USA and western hemisphere.
Dow Stretches Gains Into Day Seven With Another Record
Today, they're all in the red, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average has given up its gains slipped into negative territory. Traders have priced in an 86 percent chance, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool.
Thunderstorms and tropical cyclones tend to show increased lightning activity before they can be picked up by radar, so GOES-R will be able to give weather forecasters a much needed heads-up.
The data from GOES-R will not be available immediately as the satellite will have to do through positioning, deployment, and testing. This past August, 46 fishermen were rescued in the Bering Sea after a GOES satellite picked up their call for help.
The series is expected to stretch to 2036.
Pica stood Friday morning on a high mound at Kennedy Space Flight Center with the Atlantic to his back and space launch complex 41 far in the distance, where the satellite would soon roll into place.
GOES-R is the first of four satellites, part of a $10 billion program, to help improve weather forecasting of incoming weather hazards. "So what the forecaster will be able to see will be something like they've never seen before, and it will have incredible applications to the warning and weather forecasting process".
GOES-R is destined to join the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's constellation of weather satellites. Hopefully this rocket launches without a delay. Matthew stayed far enough offshore to cause minimal damage to Cape Canaveral, despite some early forecasts that suggested a direct strike. This includes the preparation of derivative works of, or the incorporation of such content into other works.
