In loving memory of
Robert Samuel Hicks
Jan. 12, 1932 — April 3, 2008
Services were this week for general contractor and consultant Robert Samuel “Bob” Hicks, 76, who died April 3 in his Manteca home.
Born in Apache, Okla., Mr. Hicks majored in Theology at Livermore Bible College. He lived in Manteca for 71 years, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at the Pentecostal Church of God for three decades. He was a member of the Gideons and traveled to Africa three times on missionary trips.
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife of 57 years, Iris Hicks; children, Sheila Hicks-White, and her husband, Lonnie, of Marlow, Okla., Diana Hicks of Manteca, Robert Hicks, and his wife, Monica, of Salida, Laura Diekmann, and her husband, Lee, of San Antonio, Texas, and Melanie Holbrook, and her husband, Darren, of Victorville; grandchildren, Julie White Haro, Brian White, Robert Hicks, Jr., Jeremy Hicks, Joshua Hicks, Michael Dawson, Amber Diekmann, Ryan Diekmann, Megan Holbrook and Derek Holbrook; great-grandchildren, Bobby Haro, Alexandra Haro, Christian Haro, Katie White, Taylor White and Lily Joy Hoisington-Hicks.
A celebration of life service for Mr. Hicks was held Tuesday, April 8 at Crossroads Grace Community Church in Manteca. Burial was in Park View Cemetery.

Hulen Boyd Horn
Nov. 26, 1948 — March 30, 2008
Services were April 6 for U.S. Navy veteran Hulen Boyd Horn, 59, who died March 30 at his Nevada City home.
Born in Dos Palos, Mr. Horn was raised in Manteca, where he attended New Haven Elementary and Manteca High. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, where he served as a boiler operator. He followed that training as a career after his discharge from the Navy, and made a home in Oxnard with his wife and four children. Following a heart attack and bypass surgery, he retired to Lake Isabella, east of Bakersfield, and later lived in Smartville and Nevada City.
Mr. Horn is survived by his sons, Hyrum Horn, and his wife, Denise, of Louisville, Ky., and Charles Horn of Bakersfield; daughter, Anna Kooperman, and her husband, Josh, of Bakersfield; brothers, Richard Horn, and his wife, Vickie, of Reynoldburg, Ohio, Niklaus Beglinger, and his wife, Diane, of Orland, and Chris Beglinger, and his wife, Becky, of Manteca; sisters, Rosemarie Arnold of American Fork, Utah, and Judy Stephenson, and her husband, Bill, of Woodland, Wash.; uncles, Donald Cook of West Valley City, Utah and Ernest Cook of West Point; aunt, Rosalee Thomsen of Manteca; 13 grandchildren; 15 nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Horn; son, Aaron Horn; parents, George Francis Horn and Frances Marie Beglinger; brother, George F. Horn, Jr.; sisters, Heidi Beglinger and Elsbeth Beglinger; and stepfather, Niklaus Beglinger.
Funeral arrangements for Mr. Horn were handled by The Chapel of Angels in Grass Valley. A celebration of life service was held at the home of Ernest and Rosalee Thomsen on April 6. Burial will be private.
Leota Leonardini
May 16, 1924 — April 3, 2008
Services will be today, Friday, April 11, for longtime Manteca resident Leota M. Leonardini, 83, who passed away April 3 in Manteca.
Born in Drumright, Okla., Ms. Leonardini lived in Manteca for 58 years. She is survived by her children, Eugene Walls and Jerry Walls, both of Oklahoma, Margaret Gutierrez of Ripon, and Ronald Leonardini of Stockton; sister, Lorraine DeMattei of Stockton; grandchildren, Kimberly Martin, Stephen Schmiedt, Kristin Leonardini and Jason Leonardini, all of Manteca, Patti Warde, Charles Walls and Michael Walls, all of Oklahoma, and Julie Webster of North Carolina; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service for Ms. Leonardini will begin at 1 p.m. today at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Road, in Manteca.

Margaret J. Moore
June 29, 1920 — March 31, 2008
Services will be Saturday, April 12 for retired hospital worker Margaret J. (Herman) Moore, 87, who died March 31 in Manteca.
Mrs. Moore was born in East Point, Ga. and moved to Manteca six years ago. She worked for 15 years in the housekeeping department of Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. A devout Christian, she enjoyed her Bible and Christian programs, as well as reading and reminiscing about old times.
She is survived by her children, Walter H. Moore of San Jose, Sandra M. Van Atta of Lathrop and Robert L. Moore of Squaw Valley; grandchildren, Shannon Dawson of Citrus Heights, Bobbi Dixon of Sacramento, Victoria Arista of Forest Hills, Rebecca Drinnon of Stockton, Beverly Van Atta of Menlo Park, Robby Moore of Squaw Valley and Sarah Moore of San Francisco; and great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Nicole, Austin, Samantha, Chelsea, Andrew, Amber, Katrina, Baelen, Kaylee and Dillon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Moore.
Saturday’s funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. at the Garden of Memories, 850 Abbott St., in Salinas. Burial will be at Garden of Memories.
Elsie Lenore Payne
Oct. 3, 1926 — April 3, 2008
Services will be private for retired cosmetologist and waitress Elsie Lenore “Hebe” Payne, 81, who died April 3 in Sacramento.
Mrs. Payne was born in Dallas, Texas and lived in La Puente for 35 years before coming to Manteca four years ago. She was a cosmetologist and hairdresser for 23 years and, while living in La Puente, worked as a waitress at Coco’s Restaurant in Pasadena for two decades. She was also a parishioner of World Wide Church of God in Pasadena.
Mrs. Payne loved shopping, Betty Boop and M&M Peanut candies, but lived for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished family above all else in her life. She will be remembered as a loving, caring, “Proverbs 31” woman, and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Payne of Manteca; children, Judy Stuffa, Janice Keeter and Vicki Evans, all of Manteca, and Jon Payne of Navarre, Fla.; brothers, Charles Stanford of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Charles Sorrels of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren, Wallie Vierra, Tina Sharer, Terrina Keeter and Macy Payne, all of Navarre, Fla., Tonia Keeter of Covina, Dale Ray Keeter of Big Lake, Alaska, Kim Alvares of Hillmar, Patrick Chambers of Sonora, Brian Gerlach of Burbank, Heather Jacqueline and Becky Diaz, both of Modesto, and Gina Vierra Plahs of Maui, Hawaii.
