MANTECA — Seven people were inducted into the Manteca Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame Saturday, April 12 at a ceremony at the Manteca Senior Center. The following are this year’s honorees.
Sister Ann Venito Britto
Community Service
A native of Bombay, India, Britto came to California in 1976 to teach at parochial schools in Tracy and Stockton. She arrived at St. Anthony’s Church of Manteca six years later, where today she leads a Ministry of Caring, bringing hope to people as they struggle with illness and aging. Britto is known to many as the “Mother Teresa of Manteca.”
Dr. Ricardo A. Cuevas
Health Care
Born in Honduras, Cuevas received a degree in dental surgery from the University of Iowa. He moved to Manteca in 1994, where he purchased the Manteca Dental Group. Outside the office, he has served as president of the Manteca Rotary Club and was founding president of the South San Joaquin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Linda Freitas-Abeldt
Business
Born and raised in Manteca, Freitas-Abeldt started her first business, “Linda Baton School,” while still in high school. She owned Manteca Travel with her parents before going to work as Director of the Manteca Convention and Visitors Bureau. Freitas-Abeldt is a board member of the Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of the Boys & Girls Club.
Lloyd N. Haworth
Agriculture
Described as an outstanding dairyman, Haworth operated Manteca’s Dutra Farms, growing the dairy’s herd from 400 cows to 1,400. A board member of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District, Haworth was active with his church and with local Portuguese societies before he passed away in 2003.
Evelyn Moore
Government
A graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, Moore moved to California in 1961, where she embarked on a teaching career that would last 28 years and put her at the front of classrooms at Lindbergh, French Camp and Nile Garden Schools. Moore is a board member of the Manteca Unified School District and a founding board member of Give Every Child A Chance.
Lt. Col. Joseph P. Pellegrino
At-Large
Pellegrino served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1988, with service in Vietnam and Korea, and received numerous awards and commendations. Upon retiring from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, he was awarded the Army Legion of Merit Award. Pellegrino has served as Executive Director of the Manteca Chamber of Commerce and sat on the board of the Boys & Girls Club for eight years.
Anne Talcott
Education
Talcott has taught music and chorus for the past three decades, and has made significant contributions to music education at the district, county and state levels. An accomplished musician, she has also been a leader in music at local churches for more than 40 years.
