MANTECA — Former City Manager Bob Adams has taken a job with the City of Vallejo while he continues to collect a full-time salary as a consultant to the City of Manteca.
Under his separation agreement, Adams — who left his Manteca post January 31 — was “to serve as a consultant to the City of Manteca at his regular pay” until May 31.
In mid-April, Adams joined the consulting firm Management Partners, and shortly thereafter took a job as Vallejo’s development services director.
A clerk at the Vallejo development department said Adams was on vacation this week, and Adams did not return messages left at his Manteca home.
Interim City Manager Karen McLaughlin said she was aware that Adams had taken a job in Vallejo, though she said she had not discussed it with him.
Adams’ new job has not gotten in the way of his work for Manteca, which mainly consists of answering questions about projects he oversaw, McLaughlin said
Management Partners president Jerry Newfarmer also said he was aware of Adams’ agreement with the city, but was told it would not get in the way of his new job.
“I don’t know what the details of his arrangement with Manteca were,” Newfarmer said. “(Adams) represented to me that he was available to do work.”
The city announced that Adams was retiring last July, and by the end of that month, councilmen had OK’d a separation agreement.
Under the terms of the agreement, Adams would work as a consultant through May at his regular salary — nearly $170,000 a year — and also received six months of severance pay.
Both Adams and councilmen have maintained that his decision to leave was voluntary, despite a rapid series of closed-door “public evaluation” meetings that preceded his departure.
