In a bizarre turn of events, two Valley Oak League playoff berths for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV softball playoffs likely will be decided by a four-way coin toss.
East Union High, Sierra, Oakdale and Ceres remain deadlocked at 10-3 for the league lead with just today’s games remaining. None of the teams play each other, so unless one of the bottom four in the league (a combined 11-37) manage an upset, the VOL’s playoff teams will be decided by calling heads or tails.
It’s an anticlimactic end to a thrilling race that was capped by East Union’s 2-0 shutout of Oakdale, Ceres’ 8-6 win over the Lancers, Sierra’s 1-0 victory over East Union and a 6-1 win for Oakdale over Ceres.
The No. 1 seed will take on Pioneer Valley League No. 3 seed Whitney. The Wildcats (8-4) beat Ceres 5-0 in their first year of qualifying for the playoffs in 2007 and twice have lost to East Union in the postseason.
The VOL’s No. 2 seed will take on the Capital Valley Conference No. 2. Dixon (9-3) and Center (8-3) both have potential to fill that gap.
The VOL No. 1 spot will provide its owner a much better matchup in the top half of the bracket, as PVL champion Bear River (11-1) sits in the lower half. The Bruins beat East Union in back-to-back trips to the section finals in 2007 and ’08.
GolfKyle Harman of East Union shot a 79 at Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln on Tuesday and advanced to the section Masters tournament after a one-hole playoff.
Harman will join the section’s best Monday, May 11, at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
Sierra finished second in team scoring with a 421 but won’t advance to Masters. Paul Michaleto and Miguel Dominguez each carded an 82 and Michael Hajenga shot an 83. Joey Matts scored an 86, Sammy Matts an 88 and Luis Zepeda a 95.
TennisManteca’s tennis team advanced to the Division II playoffs and will take on host Pioneer of Woodland on Tuesday, May 12.
Manteca’s No. 1 singles player, Yassen Aniss, advanced to the semifinals of the league singles tournament on Tuesday, May 5, before falling to No. 1 seed Vicente Mosso of Sonora.
SwimmingThe girls swim teams at Sierra and East Union finished first and second at the league finals on Saturday, May 2.
Sierra’s Megan Viduya was first in the 100 freestyle and second in the 200 freestyle, and Kara Hall won the 100 breaststroke and was second in the 200 individual medley.
East Union’s Natalie Heihn won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Alicia Alfter was first in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 butterfly.
In boys action, Sierra finished third after a strong showing from Josh Revives. The senior won the 100 and 200 freestyles.
Revives, along with standouts from each of the three Manteca programs, will compete in the SJS Masters Championships on May 14 and 16 at Tokay High in Lodi.
