The Spreckels Park Little League Minor Division Dodgers will head into the league tournament this weekend with a 13-1 record after blasting the Phillies 11-0 on May 21.

The team scored four runs in the first inning and three in the second before another four-score parade in the fourth.

Steven Rios tossed a sharp four-inning shutout and batted 2 for 3 with two runs. Jonathon Shaefer was 1 for 1 with two walks and two runs, and Darrion Kitson was 1 for 1 with two walks and a run.

“This was a great time to have a good team win,” Dodgers manager Jon Shaefer said. “We played great fundamental defense, ran the bases well and were smart at the plate.”

The team also topped the Reds 13-4. Rios earned the win with nine strikeouts, and Shaefer belted a home run and went 3 for 4 at the plate with five RBIs. Rios went 2 for 3, and Mark Vicente was 1 for 2 with two runs.

Spreckels Park Titans

The Junior Division Titans topped the Lathrop Ports 8-4 on a combined effort from Jayson Manuta (five innings) and Gerald Parente (two).

Bryson Sanders was 3 for 3 with three runs, and Manuta batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Makana Ward hit 1 for 2 with two walks and three runs.

The Titans (10-1-1) lead the District 67 Junior Division with three games to go.

Judo kudos

Cowell Elementary School student Sarah Phillips won the California Judo Inc. State Championships on May 23 in San Diego.

Phillips, a cousin of former Manteca High wrestler Samantha Phillips, was first in the 48-kilogram juvenile (13-14) division.
