The popular WSRA Baby Grand division returned to Madera Speedway on July 25 for its fifth appearance of the season as part of a seven-division program.

Modesto’s Michael Ray and Manteca’s Michael Sandoval, the top qualifier and trophy dash winner on the night, set the early pace in the Baby Grand main event until they encountered a slower car on Lap 7, which caused them to tangle.

Dillon Hutchison of Citrus Heights inherited the lead and never relinquished it for the remainder of the 35-lap race, despite the effort of Manteca’s Josh Gomes.

“The car wasn’t in the best shape, and I just had to drive what I had,” said Hutchison, who has four wins in five races at Madera this year. “It started getting really tight at the end, and I just tried to keep it low, and luckily I came home with the victory.”

Gomes finished second, and Sandoval third. Sandoval trails Hutchison in season points 442 to 397, while Gomes sits in third with 395.

Madera will host the second leg of the $50,000 HotWood 333 series on Saturday, Aug. 1. The Western Late Model class will battle in a 111-lap feature with the American Limited Stock, Modified Super Toyota, Toyota Sedan and Hornet divisions also racing. In addition, it will be the third annual Boots & Bikini Night, which will include live music and a bikini contest.
